At the Department of Economics, our main research focus is within the areas of labour economics, macroeconomics and public economics. Other areas of research in the Department include econometrics, family economics, financial economics, health economics (HEFUU) and development economics. We also cooperate with the Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF).

Research in the field of labour economics is conducted within the framework of Uppsala Center for Labor Studies (UCLS), which is an interdisciplinary research centre for economists, political scientists and legal scholars. Furthermore, a large share of this research is conducted in collaboration with the Institute for Evaluation of Labour Market and Education Policy (IFAU). Current research projects include evaluations of the effects of education reforms, evaluations of the effects of labour market policies, analyses of the design of health and unemployment insurance and migration issues.

Within the field of macroeconomics, some of the research deals with issues relating to wage setting in open economies. There are also projects dealing with the effects of monetary policies in cases of wage rigidity and firm-level price-setting.

The research undertaken in the field of public economics takes place within the framework of Uppsala Center for Fiscal Studies (UCFS) and includes projects dealing with how tax systems should be designed, how various taxes affect the behaviour of individuals and firms, the interaction between politicians and voters and changes in the distribution of income over time.
