Pågående forskningsprojekt:
Voters, Politicians and Economic Policy Countries in the EU reallocate between 25 and 50 % of GDP through political decisions – decisions that affect much of our daily lives. For example, governments supply important goods and services such as infrastructure, health care and education. They provide insurances against income losses due to e.g. disability and retirement. Various taxes are used to finance these services. Taxation and spending policies have important effects for the overall economic development of countries as well as for the distribution of resources between different groups in society. This project will improve our understanding of the political processes that shape these economic policies. In specific, we will investigate to what extent voters hold politicians accountable for economic policy, the role played by information and the causes and consequences of election turnout. We will use both large administrative register based datasets, as well as unique high quality surveys. Funded by VR With Mikael Elinder and Mattias Nordin
Growing up in the welfare state: Health and inequality among children and youth in Sweden Research on Swedish children´s human capital development and psychosocial health is scarse. Studies that identify causal effects of different interventions are absent. This project therefore aims to increase knowledge about how children´s living conditions and social institutions affect children´s health and welfare. The project has two main purposes. The first is to create conditions for causal analysis by building up a database containing local policy variation and identifying local policy interventions. The second objective is to investigate the causal effects of different policy measures and interventions. We explore i) the effects on mental and physical health of policies affecting who takes care of young children, ii) The school´s impact on children and youth mental health -including the effects of the 1990´s reforms to the grading system, iii) the effects on human capital development of eye-glass subsidies and iv) the effects on mental health and school performance of making parents and teachers better informed about learning difficulties and reading development. A common interest in all projects is to understanding how children of different family background are affected. The empirical analysis is based on registry data from social insurance, patient and medical records combined with data from the employment office and Statistics Sweden. The database contains the educational, health and labor market information for all children (0-18 years) residing in Sweden and their parents from 1985 onwards. Jobbtorg in the City of Stockholm This project studies municipal activation policy programmes for unemployed recipients of social assistance in the City of Stockholm where the activation policy programme is called Jobbtorg. In the Social Service Act of 1998, it was established that municipalities can require that individuals on social assistance participate actively in job-search activities or other labour market related activities in order to obtain social assistance. Jobbtorg were introduced in Stockholm in January 2008 and changed the traditional social assistance organisation since similar requirements for activation and labour market measures were introduced in all city districts. Among other things, the effects and the implementation of the activation measures are studied in the project. Funded by FAS . With Matz Dahlberg and Katarina Thorén
