Application & Admission - Department of Economics

The Master Programme in Economics starts in the fall semester each year, typically in the first week of September. We welcome and encourage highly motivated students from all around the world to apply to our programme. Uppsala University is a place for people to learn and share their experiences. If you are interested in studying in Uppsala, sign up for our newsletter here or follow the discussions on social media and read about student life in Uppsala here.

Application

You can find extensive information about how to apply to the programme, entry requirements, which documents to submit etc. here. Please note that no documents should be sent directly to the department. For international students, who need a visa or cannot apply in Swedish, the next deadline for application is January 15. For all others, the deadline is April 15.

To be eligible for the programme you have to fulfil general requirements –the same for all master programmes at Uppsala University – as well as specific requirements for the Master Programme in Economics. Among the eligible applicants, we select the students with the strongest academic records, see admission process below.

General requirements

The general requirements for admission to the master programme include prior studies with a degree at a level corresponding to three years of study at a Swedish university (approximately equivalent to a bachelor’s degree). Since all courses are taught in English you need to verify English language proficiency. Swedish students normally fulfill this requirement through English B from gymnasiet. Otherwise this requirement is typically verified by means of an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS. You can read more about general requirements here. Please note that general requirements are not handled or evaluated at the departmental level. Any questions regarding general requirements should be directed to the admission office of Uppsala University (studentservice@uu.se) or the especially dedicated master programme email address (masterprograms@uu.se).

Specific requirements

To be eligible for the programme, students need to have a solid background in economics. We require the equivalent of 60 ECTS-credits in economics, and 15 ECTS-credits in statistics. When evaluating specific requirements, we look at the academic records of the applicants. Sometimes, it is hard to judge whether or not an applicant has completed a degree project. Perhaps, several courses required small independent projects, but no specific course was devoted to a degree project. Similarly, it is sometimes hard to know whether a course should be classified as economics, statistics or a related subject. When making our assessments, we tend to be quite flexible in our interpretations. If you are in doubt – apply!

Selection of applicants

Once the Admissions office has determined that an applicant satisfies the general requirements, we at the Department of Economics make sure that the applicant also satisfies the specific requirements. Finally, we rank the eligible applicants based on their academic records. We particularly look for students who show strong skills in Economics, Statistics, Mathematics and English. Our main focus is trying to select the students with the highest potential to show excellence in the programme. Applicants are informed about the selection decisions through their account on Universityadmissions.se. For the programme starting in 2013, we had about 600 applications and we admitted about 40 students.
