The PhD Programme at the Department of Economics prepares you not only for an academic career but also for qualified work in the private and public sector, both in Sweden and abroad. The PhD Programme is awarded consistently high ratings in evaluations and our alumni can be found in important positions in many parts of society (see here for PhD students’ first post-graduation employers).

We offer an intellectually stimulating research environment with a range of research seminars every week and a steady flow of international guests. We have a comprehensive programme of courses – where second-year courses are offered in partnership with the Stockholm School of Economics and Stockholm University – which provide you with the analytical tools required for the writing of a high quality doctoral thesis.

The department’s supervisory capacity is particularly strong in the fields of labour economics, macroeconomics, political economics and public economics. Many of our doctoral students spend one or two semesters at prominent American universities (including, for example, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and UC Berkeley). We offer funding from the first working day, as well as office space in the department.
