Education at the Department of Economics

The teaching of economics at Uppsala University has a long tradition. The first chair in economics was instituted in 1741. Today, about 15 full professors, 10 associate professors and an additional 20 post-doctoral researchers and teachers participate in the courses offered. Due to the high level of competence within their respective fields, our teachers can offer a vast array of courses based on the latest research in the field. The large number of researchers and teachers, who are all specialists in their respective fields, makes it possible for us to also offer supervision in a number of fields within economics. It is, in other words, possible for our students to customise their educations and achieve not only width but also depth within the subject.

Each year, close to 1,000 students participate in one of the approximately 30 courses we offer. At the BA-level, our courses can be taken both independently as well as towards a Bachelor’s degree. Nevertheless, most of our students are enrolled in the Business Administration and Economics Programme or the Bachelor Programme in Political Science. At the advanced level, we offer an international Master’s programme which runs over two years. For those who are interested, there is also a four-year research programme which leads up to a PhD.
