What does an Economist do?

Are you interested in economic questions such as how individuals react to economic policy decisions and what consequences such decisions have for individuals and for the society or how economic growth can be explained, why we have business cycles, what determines unemployment and inflation and how the financial sector works? 

Studying economics gives you the tools necessary for analyzing these and many other important issues. The Department of Economics offers a wide range of courses based on the latest research in the field.

What is economics?

Undergraduate Studies

The undergraduate education in economics consists of the introductory course Economics A and the intermediate courses Economics B and C. These courses can be taken within the framework of a degree program or independently.

It is also possible to major in economics within the framework of the following degree programs:

  • Bachelor Program in Business and Economics (180 ECTS-credits)
  • Bachelor Program in Political Science (180 ECTS-credits)
  • Bachelor Program in Social Sciences (180 ECTS-credits)

Undergraduate Studies

Master´s Program

The Master's Program in Economics provides a solid basis in economic theory, statistics, econometrics and proficiency in analyzing empirical data and evaluating public policies.

The program leads to a Degree of Master of Social Science (120 credits) with Economics as the main field of study.

PhD Program

The PhD Program in Economics prepares you for a career in academia as well as for qualified positions in government ministries and agencies, international organizations and the private sector.

The department’s supervising capacity is particularly strong in labor economics, macroeconomics, political economics and public economics.

Uppsala EBA Student Association

The Uppsala Business and Economics Student Association (Uppsalaekonomerna) is the student union at the department. As a student union we work to improve the education at the university and to help students with study related issues. For instance we have a full time employed Head of Education who works with these issues and who you can turn to if you have problems with anything from examinations to admission or CSN.
